Video Analysis - St Vincent - Cruel

I was unsure as to how I felt about this music video, as listening to the lyrics and the beat it seems pretty upbeat and happy. The way the video was filmed was static shots, with the power of a slow zoom in and out of the characters. I think it is quite an awkward video to watch as you don’t know what is going to happen next, it is quite on edge.
Why did you choose the text you are analysing?
I had never seen the video before analysing this, I know the song quite well so it was interesting to see how the lyrics were matched to the video.
In what context did you encounter it?
I heard the song before on the radio and I encountered it by buying it on iTunes.
What sort of audience did you feel the video was aimed at?
As this was quite a confusing video with some slight disturbing scenes, I would say it was aimed at teenagers to adults, as they would be able to appreciate the work gone into the making and to understand the storyline and the lyrics that are being sang.
Are there any noticeable shifts in the video?
When the main singer is being buried in the ground throughout the song it shows the stages of her about to be buried alive.
What responses does the video seem to expect from you?
Reflecting on what the lyrics are trying to portray, I want to see it multiple times in order to grasp the nature if the video.
How open to negotiation is your response?
I am unsure as to how I feel to this video, as the main singer appears to be emotionless throughout the entire story; therefore I feel emotionless and don’t really know what to make of scenarios that are occurring throughout the video.
How typical do you think this video is of Music Videos?
This was quite an unusual video from what I have seen in the past, it seems pretty low budget. It didn’t follow the stereotypical conventions of a usual music video as there was no extravagant scenery or lighting, it seemed a ‘normal’ setting, and felt just like reality.
